A New Era for Canadian Women’s Hockey
Daniele Sauvageau, a Hockey Hall of Famer and former Olympic champion, has been appointed general manager of Canada’s national women’s hockey team, a role that will guide the program through the 2030 Olympic Games in France.
Sauvageau’s appointment follows a distinguished playing and coaching career that includes a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and a recent PWHL Walter Cup victory as general manager of the Montreal Victoire. Her contract with Hockey Canada runs until the 2030 Games, and she will continue to oversee the Victoire for the upcoming season before transitioning to a full‑time position with the national program.
She succeeds Gina Kingsbury, whose eight‑year tenure ended without contract renewal, and will inherit a roster that fell to silver at the recent Milan Games after the United States captured the gold‑medal final. Troy Ryan, the previous head coach, has also departed, prompting Sauvageau to begin the search for a new bench boss.
Canada’s historic dominance in international competition adds pressure to the role. The Canadian program boasts 13 world titles, a 5‑3 edge over the United States in Olympic gold medals, and a long‑standing rivalry that sees the U.S. fielding a younger, college‑laden squad. Sauvageau says the priority is to blend veteran leadership with emerging talent.
Central to her plan is the development of the next generation of players, including captain Marie‑Philip Poulin, who is 35 and approaching the twilight of her career. By investing in youth and expanding support structures across the country, Sauvageau aims to preserve Canada’s competitive edge while nurturing talent beyond the senior national team.
Beyond the roster, Sauvageau’s vision extends to grassroots and high‑performance initiatives. A former Montreal police officer and the first female coach in the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League, she founded the University of Montreal women’s hockey team and a high‑performance centre in Verdun. Those experiences shape her belief that sustainable success requires a robust pipeline that supports athletes at every level.
