Asa Barnes, a 6‑foot, 205‑pound back from Martin Westview High School, revealed his decision to join the Tennessee Volunteers during a ceremony attended by coaches, teammates and local media. The three‑star prospect, ranked No. 36 among running backs in the 2027 class by the 247Sports Composite, cited the Volunteers’ offensive scheme and the chance to play early as decisive factors.
A Strategic Addition for the Volunteers
Barnes’ commitment comes after a series of visits to Knoxville and Fayetteville, where he weighed the offerings of Tennessee against those of Arkansas. He ultimately chose the Vols, signaling a continued emphasis on building a balanced attack that can complement five‑star recruit David Gabriel Georges, who headlines the class.
The Volunteers’ 2027 recruiting class now stands at 19 commitments, a mix of in‑state standouts and out‑of‑state talent. Alongside Barnes, the roster includes four‑star prospects Malik Howard, KeSean Bowman, Kenneth Simon and Princeton Uwaifo, as well as several three‑star players such as Brandon Leavell, Jaden Butler, JP Peace and Dayon Cooper.
Coach Josh Heupel highlighted Barnes’ versatility, noting his performance in the BlueCross Bowl where he amassed 207 all‑purpose yards and two touchdowns, as well as his contributions to basketball and track. “He brings a blend of power and agility that fits our vision,” Heupel said.
The early signing period for the 2027 class opens on December 2 and runs through December 4, giving prospects a narrow window to formalize their choices. Tennessee’s staff expects to finalize the class with a handful of additional signings before the deadline.
