Football Australia is poised to cut up to 20% of its workforce, a move that would eliminate roughly 40 positions as the federation grapples with an expected second consecutive record financial loss.
A painful but necessary step
The cuts will not affect the men's or women's national teams, which will continue to receive full support despite the restructuring.
The announcement follows a period of on‑field success, including the co‑hosted 2023 Women’s World Cup, the recent Women’s Asian Cup, and the Socceroos' qualification for a sixth straight World Cup.
The projected deficit is set to exceed the A$8.5 million shortfall recorded last year, with the exact figure to be released at the annual general meeting on May 28.
In addition, the men's squad is slated to receive at least $12.5 million in FIFA prize money for its World Cup participation.
The restructuring aims to align the federation’s spending with its revenue, ensuring that the core national teams remain insulated from the financial realignment.
