A Historic Run
Colorado Academy’s girls’ soccer team captured its third consecutive state championship on Saturday, edging rival Kent Denver 2-1 in a tightly contested final.
The breakthrough came in the second half when senior forward Lyla Kocher struck twice, flipping a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Earlier, freshman Josie Solot had opened the scoring for Kent Denver, but Kocher’s composure under pressure proved decisive.
Coach Sean Stedeford had reminded his squad of the historical weight of the matchup, framing the game as a chance to avenge an earlier 1-0 loss to the same opponent in April. The Mustangs’ backline held firm in the closing minutes, preserving the lead despite a late surge from Kent Denver.
The victory marks more than just a trophy; it signals a transition period for both programs. Colorado Academy will move up to the 5A classification next season, while Kent Denver will shift to 4A, making this championship the last played under their current divisions.
Fans and alumni celebrated the milestone on social media, praising the team’s resilience and the coaching staff’s ability to sustain excellence over multiple years. The Mustangs now look ahead to a new competitive landscape, carrying the momentum of a historic three‑peat.
