Bill Radovich, a cornerstone of St. Cloud State University’s men’s hockey program, died on July 16 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the team’s trajectory.
A Legacy in the Ice
Having helped transition the program from Division II to Division I in a single year, Radovich oversaw the hiring of Herb Brooks as the first Division I coach and secured the state funding that made the National Hockey Center a reality.
The impact of his work resonated years later when the Huskies reached the Frozen Four in 2013, a milestone celebrated by players, staff and the broader community.
Former coaches Craig Dahl and Bob Motzko recalled Radovich’s mentorship, describing him as a steady presence who believed in the program’s potential even when resources were scarce.
In recognition of his contributions, the William and Patricia Radovich Family Hockey Scholarship was established, bearing his name and ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from his vision.
Beyond the rink, Radovich’s influence extended to the university’s broader athletic identity, a fact highlighted during his induction into the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
