Amenities and Vision
The Guyandotte Riverfront Park, situated just steps from Man High School, has officially opened its doors to the public. Its centerpiece is a pair of outdoor pickleball courts, marking the first such facilities in Logan County, alongside newly painted basketball hoops that invite players of all ages.
A gravel walking path winds through the green space, offering a low‑key route for joggers and families. City officials say the park is part of a broader strategy to draw tourists, especially those using the nearby Hatfield McCoy Trail System, and to give locals a reason to stay active without leaving town.
Funding and Future Expansions
Mayor John Fekete championed the project, securing a $400,000 federal grant and supplementing it with contributions from local businesses and the county commission. The $130,000 cost of the courts was covered through this blended financing model, demonstrating a partnership between government and the private sector.
Future phases will add a splash pad that will replace the aging pool built in the 1970s, a boat ramp for river access, and an amphitheater designed to host community events. Organizers anticipate the splash pad will be ready for use next spring, expanding the park’s appeal beyond sports.
Community Reception
Since the opening, residents have embraced the new space. Rachael Browning and her family now frequent the courts for regular pickleball matches, and local trail riders have noted the added amenity as a welcome reason to extend their visits to the area.
