Casey Day, a former Iowa Hawkeye pitcher, has been appointed pitching coach for the University of Iowa baseball team, bringing a blend of playing experience and professional development to the role.
A familiar arm returns to the program
Head coach Rick Heller highlighted Day's work ethic, talent, and deep understanding of the program's standards in announcing the hire, emphasizing that Day's background aligns perfectly with the team's ambitions.
Day's professional trajectory includes stints in player development with Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles, where he helped the Delmarva Shorebirds dominate the Carolina League with a league‑leading 1,299 strikeouts in 2025.
Prior to his MLB roles, Day coached at Kirkwood Community College, guiding the 2023 squad to a 38‑win season and 444 strikeouts, while also showcasing his own pitching talents at Kirkwood, Wichita State and Iowa, highlighted by a 3.18 ERA in eight relief appearances during the 2022 Iowa season.
Off the mound, Day holds a degree in sport and recreation management, underscoring a commitment to both athletic performance and academic excellence.
