The Greenfield High School football program has named Jeff Bengston as its new head coach, ushering in the 22nd leader in the school's storied history. Bengston, who previously served as an assistant focusing on the line, stepped into the role in late May, bringing a fresh perspective to a team that has seen its roster shrink to nine signed players.
A Coach With Local Roots
A native of Brattleboro, Vermont, Bengston climbed the coaching ladder after a college stint at Western New England. His two‑year tenure working directly with the linemen gave him an intimate understanding of the squad's strengths and gaps, setting the stage for a season focused on development and tactical balance.
Bengston's vision centers on a more dynamic, youth‑driven offense that emphasizes throwing the ball downfield. He believes that a balanced attack will not only showcase the talent on the current roster but also attract new participants eager to be part of a growing program.
Building From Nine to Thirty
Entering the fall season, the team currently has nine players signed up, a modest number that reflects both the program's recent challenges and its untapped potential. Bengston has set an ambitious target: swelling the roster to roughly 30 athletes by the start of the season, a goal that would revitalize participation and depth.
Three athletes — Casey Burke, Bryce Zraunig, and Connor Bengston — have already taken the field in early preparations, signaling the first steps toward that larger vision. Their early work under Bengston's guidance offers a glimpse of the energy he hopes to spread throughout the entire squad.
The transition also ties into a broader network of local institutions, from Greenfield High School itself to partner organizations such as Wilbraham & Monson, Franklin County Bulldogs, and nearby educational and recreational facilities. These connections provide a foundation for community support, resource sharing, and future growth.
