Midland High names DJ Weems as new girls basketball head coach
Midland High has appointed DJ Weems as the new head coach of its girls basketball team, a move that signals the school’s intent to restore competitiveness to a program that has struggled in recent seasons. Weems expressed gratitude and confidence in his new role, aiming to turn around the Lady Dawgs' performance.
Weems arrives after a successful stint with the McCamey Lady Badgers, where he guided the squad to a 14‑11 record and shared a Class 2A‑District 6 championship, showcasing his ability to develop talent and compete at a high level.
His coaching journey began as an assistant at Pecos before he played collegiately for the Dean Bulldogs, giving him both a player’s perspective and a foundation in disciplined strategy.
A new era for the Lady Dawgs
Last season the Midland Lady Dawgs posted a 1‑9 mark in district play, with five of those defeats decided by ten points or fewer, underscoring how narrowly the team fell short of success.
The upcoming realignment sees Frenship transition to Class 5A, reshaping Class 6A‑District 2 and presenting Midland with a clear pathway to climb to the top of its new district.
Weems said he sees untapped potential within the roster and is eager to harness that promise, believing that the right blend of coaching, community support, and player development can elevate the program.
