Former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha took to social media to voice his dismay over Hockey India's decision to replace the iconic blue jersey with a saffron one for the upcoming 2026 Hockey World Cup.
A Symbolic Shift in Colours
The new kits, unveiled by Hockey India, feature mandala-inspired patterns, tricolour detailing and subtle blue accents, aiming to convey courage, sacrifice and victory while drawing on the Indian flag and the rising sun.
Rasquinha, who led the national side during his playing days, posted his concerns on X, formerly Twitter, emphasizing that the blue jersey has long been a marker of the team's legacy and identity.
A Historic Tournament on the Horizon
The tournament itself will be historic, with the men's and women's events scheduled to run together in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 14 to 30, marking the first time the two competitions share a stage.
India's men are slotted into Group D alongside Wales, England and Pakistan, while the women will open against China before meeting South Africa and England, a draw that adds intrigue to the competition.
India's men have a solitary World Cup triumph from 1975, and the women's best finish remains a fourth‑place finish in 1974, underscoring the significance of the upcoming campaign.
