A 5-2 victory over Four Corners was anchored by the dominant right arm of Mitch Price, who struck out eight batters, and the steady left-handed work of Caleb Crist, who fanned five. Their efforts kept the opposition to just four hits while the Nationals capitalized on timely hitting.
Championship Night in the Pony Hills League
The offense came alive in the third inning when Jaxon Christensen delivered a two-run double that put the Nationals ahead. Later, Cooper Leiferman and Keaton Christensen added RBI singles to extend the lead, while Andrew Coverdale and Matt Lusk contributed run-scoring singles for Four Corners. The combined effort left the scoreboard tilted in favor of the champions as the final outs were recorded.
Beyond the championship game, the district schedule delivered a cascade of dramatic finishes. The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks edged Salem 3-2, with pitcher Blake Svoboda delivering a career-high 17 strikeouts. Cam Quigley, Broc Haldeman and Caden Alfson each collected two hits, while Salem now faces Madison in a win-and-in showdown scheduled for Friday evening.
In District 5B, the Parkston Mudcats surged past Winner/Colome 14-9 in a high-scoring affair. Gunnar Wilhelm and Spencer Freudenthal each launched a pair of home runs and drove in four runs apiece, while Max Scott earned the pitching win after a six-inning start. Austin Calhoon powered the offense with three hits, four RBIs and a home run, and Austin Richey added two hits and two RBIs.
Mount Vernon also secured a hard-fought victory over Platte, winning 5-4 in extra innings. A critical error by Platte on a ball off the bat of Cameron Deinert scored the game-winning run in the top of the 11th. Relief pitcher Tyce Feistner, a Legion-aged talent, recorded ten strikeouts in 4 2/3 shutout innings to earn the win, while Deric Denning contributed two hits for the Mustangs.
With the district titles decided, the Kimball/White Lake Nationals will join the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks, Parkston Mudcats and other qualifiers in the Class B state amateur tournament. The upcoming tournament promises to showcase the same competitive spirit and talent that defined the district championships, as teams from across South Dakota converge for a final showdown.
