University of Richmond’s Defensive Star Leads Preseason All-League Honors

Camden Byrd earns Defensive Player of the Year as Richmond eyes a strong 2026 season

The University of Richmond announced that six of its football players have been selected to the 2026 Patriot League preseason All-League team, underscoring the program’s upward trajectory heading into the new campaign.

Preseason Honors

Camden Byrd, a senior defensive standout, was named the Patriot League Football Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after posting 34 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and ranking second in the league in forced fumbles during the 2025 season.

The Spiders were tabbed to finish tied for third in the league’s preseason poll, a placement that reflects a 2025 season in which they ranked third in rushing offense with 1,772 yards and allowed just 14 sacks while posting a 64.6 percent completion rate at quarterback.

Key contributors include running back Aziz Foster‑Powell, who led the team with 594 rushing yards on 125 carries, and offensive lineman Ronald Anderson, a cornerstone of the line that helped the offense achieve its conference standing.

Linebacker Carter Glassmyer recorded 82 tackles last year, while defensive backs Jordan Allen and Tayshaun Burney combined for an interception, four pass breakups and a team‑leading 10 breakups respectively.

Quarterback Kyle Wickersham returns as the offensive catalyst, having topped the Patriot League in completion percentage, and will once again direct a balanced attack that features a strong rushing foundation and a defense that led the conference in passing defense and ranked fourth nationally.

The season will open at home on August 29 against Bucknell, giving the team an early opportunity to translate preseason expectations into on‑field momentum.
