A new direction for the Seleção
Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil's head coach, announced that the trio of Neymar, Casemiro and Danilo will no longer feature in the national team's plans heading into the 2028 Copa America. The decision marks the end of an era for the veteran forward, who has already retired from international competition after the recent World Cup disappointment.
While Casemiro and Danilo have not yet declared their own retirements, Ancelotti emphasized that the squad will be reshaped with a younger core. He hinted at the integration of fresh talent, aiming to blend vigor with the experience of players such as Marquinhos, who he intends to retain for continuity.
The coach outlined a dual‑track vision that extends beyond the immediate tournament. He spoke of preparing for the 2030 World Cup, noting that the 2028 edition will serve as a testing ground for new faces while preserving a backbone of seasoned professionals.
Ancelotti also addressed external interest, confirming that the Italian soccer federation (FIGC) had approached him about taking charge of their national side. Despite the overture, he reiterated his commitment to Brazil, stating that he does not intend to break the promise he made to the country.
Brazil's last Copa America triumph came in 2019, a gap the coach hopes to close with the upcoming squad. By injecting youth and maintaining strategic continuity, he believes the team can rediscover the winning formula that once brought glory to the Seleção.
