The Orlando Solar Bears announced this week that they have re-signed forward Keegan McMullen, securing the 24-year-old for the upcoming 2026-27 campaign. The move follows a rookie season in which he appeared in nine games and contributed five points.
McMullen, a native of Cambridge, Ontario, first wore the Solar Bears colors during the 2025-26 season, registering three goals and two assists in a limited role. His performance earned him a contract extension after the team evaluated his potential and work ethic.
A junior career in the OHL
Before his collegiate tenure, McMullen developed in the Ontario Hockey Association, suiting up for the Soo Greyhounds and Peterborough Petes. Across 106 junior appearances he tallied 32 points — 11 goals and 21 assists — showcasing a blend of offensive skill and playmaking ability.
His four-year stint at the University of Windsor was marked by steady growth, culminating in 80 points — 45 goals and 35 assists — over 105 games. The forward earned Ontario University Athletics West First Team All-Star honors in each of his final two seasons, underscoring his consistent production.
Implications for the Solar Bears
The signing aligns the forward with the franchise’s long-term vision, as the organization looks to blend home-grown talent with the experience needed to contend in the ECHL’s competitive landscape. The move also reinforces the club’s connection to its Canadian roots, a narrative that resonates with fans and sponsors alike.
With the roster now set, the Solar Bears aim to leverage McMullen’s offensive instincts and work ethic as they target a deeper playoff run in the coming season. The partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning remains a key development pathway, offering McMullen a clear route to the NHL should his performance continue to ascend.
