Former Tennessee assistant coach Rod Clark began the 2023‑24 season under a cloud after the NCAA announced a two‑game suspension for breaching recruiting regulations.
NCAA Classification and Penalties
The sanction stemmed from a Level III violation uncovered after a three‑year probe, which determined that Clark had engaged in impermissible contact with a prospective transfer player, Yuri Collins, before the athlete entered the transfer portal.
Clark’s relationship with Collins dated back to 2017, when he coached the player’s AAU team, giving him a long‑standing connection to the recruit, his father and the family’s basketball network.
During the 2021‑22 season, Collins’ AAU coach alerted Clark that the guard was contemplating a move from Saint Louis, prompting Clark to initiate a series of phone calls and text messages with the player’s family.
The exchange comprised seven calls and seven texts with Collins’ father, four direct calls with the player, and the distribution of two recruiting graphics, after which Clark halted communication once he learned Collins had not yet filed paperwork to enter the portal.
Although the NCAA concluded that the interactions produced only a marginal recruiting advantage, it nonetheless imposed additional penalties, including a ban on off‑campus recruiting, a week‑long suspension of recruiting communications, and mandatory rules education for both Clark and the university.
Clark, who cooperated fully with investigators and accepted responsibility, is now preparing for his second season as an assistant at Indiana, where he will continue to navigate the fallout of the sanctions.
