The Idaho Steelheads announced this week that they have secured forward Nick Portz for the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign, cementing a key piece of their roster as they look to build on recent successes.
Portz, at 26 years old, arrives after a breakout rookie season in which he recorded 23 points, comprising 11 goals and 12 assists, across 54 games with the Steelheads.
The highlight of his debut came on March 25, when he erupted for a hat trick against the South Carolina Stingrays, a performance that underscored his offensive potential.
A Look Ahead
Prior to his professional stint, Portz honed his skills over four collegiate seasons split between the University of North Dakota and St. Cloud State University, where he developed a reputation for relentless forechecking.
His junior hockey years were equally diverse, featuring stints in the USHL with the Tri‑City Storm and Muskegon Lumberjacks, as well as time in the NAHL with the Minnesota Wilderness, experiences that prepared him for the rigors of the ECHL.
Coaches and teammates alike are optimistic that Portz’s blend of size, work ethic, and proven scoring touch will translate into a deeper playoff push for Idaho.
The organization’s leadership emphasized that Portz’s signing aligns with the team’s strategy of blending youthful talent with veteran savvy, a formula that has yielded competitive results in recent seasons.
Fans can expect to see Portz wearing the familiar blue and gold on home ice in Boise, where the atmosphere is expected to be electric as the new season approaches.
