Depth Across the Board
The Vaqueros will open their second year of FCS competition on August 29, traveling to face UT Permian Basin in a matchup that marks the beginning of a schedule that could define their campaign.
A key strength for the team is a defense that returns eight starters from a unit that helped the program finish 14th nationally in points allowed, conceding just 18.8 per game last season.
That defensive front also led the Southland Conference in forced fumbles and defensive touchdowns, a testament to the continuity coach Travis Bush hopes to translate into early-season success.
On offense, the line has been among the most disciplined in the league, surrendering only 1.50 sacks per game a year ago, a figure that ranked 28th in the FCS and second in the conference.
The quarterback position boasts a blend of experience and new talent, with returners Jaxon Baize, Atzel Chavez Jr., Aidan Jakobsohn and Jayden Paluseo joined by newcomer Garret Rangel, giving the coaching staff multiple options.
Depth at running back, wide receiver and tight end also promises versatility, as the roster adds newcomers such as Malachi Lane, Jackson Regan and tight ends Reid Mikeska and Garrison Curry while retaining key contributors like TJ Dement and Tyler Day.
