The University of North Carolina football program kicked off its preseason camp on July 30, marking the first official work under head coach Bill Belichick. The session, held on the Chapel Hill campus, emphasized a return to fundamentals and technique as the team acclimates to its new leadership.
Projected Starters Take Shape
Quarterback Miles O’Neill took the majority of individual drills as the No. 1 signal‑caller, while Billy Edwards Jr., still shaking off the knee injury that sidelined him for most of last season, split first‑team reps with O’Neill. Both quarterbacks were observed working extensively from under center, a shift that Belichick has highlighted as a priority.
The offensive line saw Christo Kelly and Aidan Banfield projected as starters, while transfer running back Benjamin Hall, who arrived from Michigan, led the backfield drills alongside returning sophomores Jaylen McGill and Demon June. Hall’s presence added a new dimension to a group that also includes powerful backs like Shamar Easter.
At the skill positions, Carson Sneed, a freshman tight end, impressed with his ability to contribute in both blocking and receiving roles, and Jordan Shipp emerged as the top pass‑catcher and returner, leading the wide‑receiver corps during the opening practice.
Belichick spent considerable time coaching specialists and quarterbacks, underscoring his hands‑on approach, while the team’s depth chart continues to evolve as players like Travis Burgess, Au’Tori Newkirk and Jacqawn McRoy battle for starting spots.
