Connecticut Cup: A Merit‑Based Showcase for High School Baseball
The inaugural Connecticut Cup baseball showcase unfolded on the campus of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, bringing together more than 140 of the state’s top high school players for a day of competition and evaluation. Organized by House of Sports, the free event was designed to provide merit‑based opportunities for athletes to be evaluated by college recruiters.
The daylong program featured two All‑Star games split by graduation class, alongside batting practice, defensive drills and video sessions. TrackMan delivered pitch‑by‑pitch data for every throw, and forty pitchers took the mound, allowing coaches to assess performance with advanced metrics.
Over 35 college representatives attended, giving prospects a rare chance to make direct impressions. Each participant received a personalized highlight reel compiled from the event’s footage, reinforcing the showcase’s focus on development and exposure.
Marcus Wearing, a first baseman from North Haven who posted impressive junior season statistics, praised the event for its developmental focus. Pitcher Brody Kasack, a Bethel standout, noted it as his first encounter with college coaches, retiring all five batters he faced and highlighting the exposure he gained.
House of Sports advisor Gary Lisiewski emphasized the event’s mission to create opportunities based on merit rather than financial means, while UConn coach Jim Penders expressed optimism that the Connecticut Cup could become an annual fixture on the high school baseball calendar.
