Villanova football is gearing up for its first season in the Patriot League after nearly two decades in the Coastal Athletic Association. The program, which finished the preseason coaches’ poll atop the league, is now faced with the challenge of translating that expectation into on‑field performance.
A Roster in Flux
With graduation stripping away several stalwarts, the Wildcats have turned to a blend of fresh faces and seasoned returnees. Senior quarterback Robert Russo and freshman Nolan DiLucia are slated to share the first‑team reps, while the offensive line will lean on Chris McCullers and Quin Whalen. At wide receiver, Braden Reed and Brandon Binkowski will anchor the group, and the secondary will be bolstered by Josh Oluremi, Newton Essiem, Garret Rogan and Jayvont Williams.
Defensively, the team will miss the departed Zahmir Dawud and Anthony Hawkins, who have moved on to FBS programs, but linebacker Omari Bursey is expected to be one of the unit’s cornerstones. The return of junior running back Ja’briel Mace adds a dynamic element to the backfield, and the coaching staff, including Mark Ferrante, continues to shape the scheme.
The Wildcats open the season on August 28 against William & Mary at Villanova Stadium, a matchup that will test the new‑look squad under the bright lights of a historic transition.
