Chris Taylor, a youth football coach, has resumed his role with the Sportsplug Elite 7U flag football team after an 11‑month deployment aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford, a Nimitz‑class aircraft carrier that recently completed a historic circumnavigation.
The return marks an emotional homecoming for Taylor, who described the moment as “pure joy” to be back on the sidelines with his players, many of whom had waited for his guidance throughout his absence.
During his time on the carrier, Taylor served on the flight deck, coordinating the launch and recovery of fighter jets and managing the complex logistics that keep a carrier battle group operational at sea.
“The discipline and focus required on the flight deck translate directly to the practice field,” Taylor said, noting that the same attention to detail and teamwork he applied to guiding aircraft now shapes his coaching approach.
From the Deck to the Dugout
Adding a personal touch, Taylor’s son Amir, a spirited 7‑year‑old, also features on the same team, giving father and son a unique on‑field connection that enriches their family bond.
Military values such as integrity, courage and commitment have become cornerstones of Taylor’s philosophy, influencing how he mentors the young athletes and encouraging them to carry those principles beyond the game.
“I want these kids to understand that they can overcome any adversity,” Taylor explained, emphasizing that the lessons learned on the carrier and in the locker room are meant to empower the next generation of leaders in Hampton Roads.
Taylor’s journey illustrates how service to one’s country can seamlessly intersect with service to one’s community, forging a bridge between defense and development.
