The Idaho Steelheads announced this week that they have secured forward Nick Portz for the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign, cementing a key piece of their roster.
Portz’s Rookie Breakout
Portz’s 23‑point rookie campaign included a standout performance on March 25, when he recorded his first ECHL hat‑trick against the South Carolina Stingrays.
He finished the season with double‑digit goals among four Steelheads rookies, underscoring his offensive contributions.
Before turning professional, Portz honed his game at the University of North Dakota and St. Cloud State University, posting 16 points in 66 games for North Dakota and nine points in 50 appearances for St. Cloud State.
His junior career also featured stints in the USHL with the Tri‑City Storm and Muskegon Lumberjacks, where he tallied 75 points in 90 games, and in the NAHL with the Minnesota Wilderness, contributing 43 points in 61 games.
The Steelheads’ affiliate relationship with the Dallas Stars adds a developmental dimension to the signing, as the club looks to leverage Portz’s experience for depth and future growth.
With the roster now set, the organization anticipates that Portz’s blend of college pedigree and professional exposure will help push the team toward a stronger showing in the upcoming season.
Fans can look forward to seeing how the forward integrates into the lineup and contributes to the Steelheads’ pursuit of a playoff berth.
