A Revived Rivalry
A historic rivalry between Cheyney University and Lincoln University, once celebrated as the Battle of the Firsts, was interrupted when Cheyney discontinued its program in 2017, leaving a void that the upcoming games hope to fill.
The 2023 edition of the event drew 47,266 spectators, far exceeding projections and demonstrating a pent‑up demand that city officials and university leaders are eager to harness for future editions.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, herself a Lincoln alumna, underscored the symbolic power of the games, noting that young people need to see role models who reflect their own aspirations.
Delaware State Athletic Director Tony Tucker described the turnout as a shock that "basically shocked the world," highlighting the outsized impact of the partnership that also involves the Philadelphia Eagles, the universities and the broader community.
