The buzz surrounding Michigan’s 2026 football outlook has centered on a surprising name: Savion Hiter.
Ranked as the No. 2 running back recruit in the 2026 class, Hiter arrived on campus with a reputation for size and speed that caught the eye of coaches during spring drills.
A Freshman Sensation
Coach Kyle Whittingham described him in stark terms, noting that at six feet tall and 220 pounds, Hiter possesses a frame that rivals many NFL backs.
The coaching staff envisions a young playmaking core that includes Hiter, returning standouts Jordan Marshall and Bryce Underwood, as well as Andrew Marsh, all poised to inject fresh energy into the offense.
Michigan’s attack struggled to find consistency in 2025, ranking 11th in the Big Ten with an average of 27.5 points per game. The addition of Hiter is seen as a catalyst for climbing the conference ladder.
Whittingham has emphasized that raw talent alone will not be enough; film study, conditioning and mastering the mental side of the game are essential for the freshman to translate his physical gifts into production.
The Road Ahead
Defensive coordinator Jay Hill will continue to anchor a solid defense, while special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs has already overseen noticeable improvements in that phase of the team. Fall camp is slated to begin as the Wolverines prepare for their September 5 season opener against Western Michigan, a game that will serve as the first test of Hiter’s readiness.
