Bryce Underwood, the former No. 1 overall college football recruit for Michigan, entered the spotlight with a series of audacious preseason statements.
The Hype That Followed a Recruit
During a Big Ten Network interview he declared that "Nobody's seen a freshman like me," and added that he intended to win multiple national championships and a Heisman Trophy before even taking a single snap.
The remarks sparked immediate criticism, especially after NFL veteran Eric Weddle suggested Underwood might find himself benched, and after a mixed freshman season that failed to live up to the hype.
At a youth camp in Detroit, Underwood doubled down, saying he would be the best player from Michigan, a claim he later clarified referred specifically to the state’s incoming talent, citing competition with Dante Moore, the likely No. 1 pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
Moore, a former Detroit King standout, acknowledged Underwood’s talent in a recent interview with WolverinesWire, while Underwood himself said he harbors no regrets about his outspoken remarks.
His first chance to validate those promises arrives on September 5, when Michigan opens the season against Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium.
