Spencer Meier, a 27‑year‑old former captain of the St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team, has rejoined the program as an assistant coach under new head coach Nick Oliver. His return marks the latest chapter in a hockey trajectory that blends on‑ice grit with off‑ice leadership.
A Full‑Circle Journey
Meier spent five seasons at SCSU from 2018 to 2023, appearing in 171 games — the fourth‑most in program history. As captain for three of those years he helped the Huskies to a 105‑60‑16 record, four NCAA tournament berths and a 2023 NCHC Frozen Faceoff championship. He was a key contributor in the 2022‑23 season, notching a goal in the Frozen Four semifinals and setting a school record with 19 conference wins.
After being cut by the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede in 2017, Meier resurrected his career with the Fargo Force, where he helped the club capture the Clark Cup. He later turned professional in the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays before transitioning to coaching. Most recently he served two seasons as an assistant at Sartell High School under Ryan Hacker, while also running his own venture, 320 Hockey.
Oliver, who took the helm of the Huskies program earlier this year, highlighted Meier’s work ethic, hockey sense and ability to connect with players during the hiring process. “Spencer brings a deep understanding of our culture and a relentless drive that will help shape the next generation of Huskies,” Oliver said. Meier’s priorities include establishing daily standards, fostering player‑coach relationships and reinforcing the team’s identity as he steps onto the bench.
The upcoming season will feature nine returning veterans but also 17 newcomers, a mix that Meier sees as an opportunity rather than a challenge. He points to the championship he helped engineer with a largely new Fargo Force squad as proof that chemistry can blossom quickly. With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh talent, the Huskies hope to build on the momentum of their recent successes and contend for another conference title.
