A sweeping overhaul across all phases
Iowa’s football program is navigating one of the most extensive roster transformations in recent memory. The departure of top‑tier talent spans every position, reshaping the team’s identity on offense, defense and special teams.
Among the most notable losses is dependable quarterback Mark Gronowski, whose leadership will be replaced by an untested starter. The offensive line also sees three new NFL draftees, forcing the coaching staff to seek fresh faces to protect the backfield.
Defensive line under the microscope
Head coach Kirk Ferentz has pinpointed the defensive line as the biggest area of concern. Seven of the eight top linemen from last season have left, leaving only Bryce Hawthorne as the sole returning veteran.
Ferentz expects the unit to operate with a more rotational approach, spreading snaps among younger players who are still developing their collegiate experience.
Quarterback transition and line reshuffle
The quarterback position will see a new starter take the helm, adding uncertainty to the offensive scheme. At the same time, the revamped offensive line must quickly gel to provide the stability needed for the new quarterback to succeed.

Despite the upheaval, Ferentz remains optimistic that the influx of younger players will strengthen the defensive line by next year, as experience accumulates and the roster stabilizes.
