A New Era for Huskies Hockey
Spencer Meier, a former standout defenseman for St. Cloud State and Sartell‑St. Stephen, has been appointed assistant coach for the Huskies' 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of on‑ice experience and leadership to the program.
Meier’s collegiate career at St. Cloud State was marked by three years as team captain and participation in four NCAA Tournaments, underscoring his deep connection to the university.
At Sartell‑St. Stephen High School, he became the all‑time leading scorer among defensemen, guiding the team to a Clark Cup championship with the Fargo Force and earning a reputation as a defensive powerhouse.
His achievements were recognized league‑wide when he captured the 2022‑23 National Collegiate Hockey Conference Sportsmanship Award and was a finalist for the HHA Hockey Humanitarian Award, highlighting his commitment on and off the ice.
After completing his playing career, Meier spent a season with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingers before transitioning to coaching, a path that led him back to his alma mater.
Nick Oliver, who recently took over as head coach of the Huskies, cited Meier’s character, work ethic and proven leadership as decisive factors in the hiring decision.
During his three‑year stint as an assistant at Sartell‑St. Stephen, Meier helped the program secure back‑to‑back conference championships, a testament to his ability to develop talent and foster a winning culture.
The university’s athletic department expressed confidence that Meier’s blend of experience and passion will contribute significantly to the team’s competitiveness in the upcoming season.
