Georgia Southwestern State University has named James Frey as its fifth head coach for women's basketball in Division II, tapping a veteran with three decades of collegiate experience.
The hiring followed a six‑week search that concluded with the university extending an offer to Frey, who previously secured 300 victories over 11 seasons while coaching in Georgia.
Frey, who brings 35 years of experience in college athletics, described his return to the region as a full‑circle moment, recalling relationships forged during earlier stops in the state.
A Defense‑First Vision
His coaching philosophy centers on accountability across academics, community involvement and a defense‑first mindset that pairs with an up‑tempo offensive approach.
The program will continue to invest in women's basketball while aiming for competitive success, with an emphasis on recruiting high‑character student‑athletes from South Georgia, including local high schools, junior colleges and the transfer portal.
Five current players have remained with the roster, and five new signees are set to join, though two scholarship slots remain open as the staff continues to prioritize character in its recruiting targets.
Frey stressed that effort is non‑negotiable for scholarship recipients, and he praised former Memphis head coach Hana Haden for her support in facilitating his return.
He also took the opportunity to thank his family, mentor Coach Jody Adams, and the late coaches Gerald Cox and Sparky Reeves for shaping his career.
