Pat Brisson, the veteran agent who represents a handful of the league’s most recognizable names, sat down with Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now to unpack the unprecedented five‑year, $94 million contract extension signed by Macklin Celebrini with the San Jose Sharks.
The deal, which guarantees an average annual value of $18.8 million, marks the highest per‑year payout in NHL history and signals a new benchmark for elite talent.
Brisson revealed that he had asked for an early‑to‑mid‑June meeting with Sharks owner Hasso Plattner and general manager Mike Grier, a session that took place without Celebrini in attendance.
Describing Celebrini as a ‘unicorn’ player, Brisson emphasized the forward’s rare blend of skill, work ethic and marketability that set him apart from typical prospects.
During the negotiations, the conversation turned to extending the contract beyond the minimum term required, a move Brisson said was intended to give the franchise additional flexibility while rewarding the player’s long‑term vision.
While the $18.8 million AAV could have been pushed higher, Brisson argued that the figure was fair given the player’s projected impact and the market context, noting that the Sharks had already shown willingness to invest heavily.
