Matt Britton was officially hired this week as head coach and assistant athletic director at Bloomington North High School, bringing with him a career that spans nearly three decades and nearly 300 victories across boys basketball programs in Indiana and Illinois.
He inherits a program that posted a .500 or better record in seven of the past nine seasons under former coach Jason Speer, and he will be joined by a group of seniors — Derrick Cross, Levi Lindeman, Nate Walker and Tevin Bridgwaters — who were part of last season’s sectional exit.
Britton emphasizes consistency, culture and buy‑in from players as the foundation of his teams’ sustained success.
A Decade of Growth
A decade ago he guided Bloomfield to the Class 1A state title game before stints at South Spencer, and most recently he led Linton‑Stockton to a 25‑5 record and a semi‑state championship run in 2023.
Adapting to the Talent
He has shown a willingness to adjust his schemes, employing zone defense in 2016 when depth was limited and shifting to more man‑to‑man in recent years as his rosters have grown deeper and quicker.
At Bloomington North he plans to increase the tempo, aiming for an up‑and‑down style of play that leverages the speed of his returning starters.
Despite the late hiring, which compresses his preparation window, Britton remains confident that growth will be evident by February and March, and he is already assembling a new coaching staff.
Beyond wins, he emphasizes personal development, seeking to cultivate high‑character leaders who can succeed on and off the court.
