A Legal Win for a Hoosier Forward
Former Indiana University forward Sam Alexis has secured a preliminary injunction that grants him an additional year of athletic eligibility, clearing the way for him to compete in the 2026‑27 season.
The decision, handed down by the Twentieth Judicial District in Nashville, Tennessee, not only benefits Alexis but also extends eligibility to other 2022 high school graduates who exhausted their four years of college basketball participation.
The legal win builds on a broader class‑wide injunction issued by a U.S. District judge in Colorado, which called on the NCAA to declare eligible the entire class of 2022 athletes who had used up their eligibility by spring 2023.
Standing 6‑foot‑9, Alexis averaged 7.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game last season, contributing 21.3 minutes per appearance for the Hoosiers.
Coach Darian DeVries said the addition of Alexis brings versatility and depth, qualities that will be essential as the team prepares for a grueling schedule at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, where six contests will be played over eight days.
Alexis’s recent experience on the international stage, where he helped Indiana claim its first win in the tournament, also gave him a head start after he completed obligations in Oklahoma City and arrived in Peru the following morning.
Attorney Darren Heitner described the injunction as a game‑changer and urged the NCAA to formally adopt the ruling for the benefit of the whole 2022 cohort.
Indiana currently holds an open scholarship for the upcoming roster, and the coaching staff sees Alexis’s experience as a catalyst for leadership and on‑court resilience.
Beyond the individual case, the injunction may set a legal precedent that could reshape eligibility rules for future classes, prompting the NCAA to reconsider its policies on athlete compensation and academic timelines.
