Judge Michael J. Wilson granted a temporary injunction that not only shields the plaintiffs from NCAA sanctions this season but also mandates that the transfer portal remain open from Monday at noon until August 10 at 8 a.m. for entries and school outreach.
The court’s order explicitly bars the NCAA from enforcing its restitution rule against the athletes and their institutions for the current academic year, a provision that has drawn sharp criticism from the governing body.
According to the plaintiffs’ attorney, the ruling underscores a pattern of uneven rule application, noting that waivers previously granted to athletes with junior‑college or NAIA experience have created a disparate treatment that the injunction seeks to rectify.
Among the plaintiffs, Jalen Washington of Vanderbilt emerged as the lead plaintiff, but the complaint also names I’Ashea Myles, Chendall Weaver, A.J. Storr, Jason Edwards, Daniel Egbuniwe and Zachary Davis, each representing a different program across the country.
The Texas Trial Group, a legal collective that filed the complaint on July 6, hailed the decision on social media as “Justice,” while the NCAA has yet to issue a public response to the AP’s request for comment.
The injunction also aligns with a broader eligibility framework approved on June 23, which permits athletes to compete for up to five seasons within a ten‑year window, beginning with full‑time enrollment or after turning 19.
With the portal window now set, coaches and administrators across the nation are adjusting recruitment strategies, anticipating a surge of transfers that could reshape rosters for the 2026‑27 season.
