Michigan Wolverines head coach Mike Boynton Jr. has completed the final piece of his debut coaching staff by hiring Dylan Murphy as an assistant coach, marking the fifth and final assistant position filled for the program’s inaugural season.
Murphy arrives after a three‑year tenure as head coach of the NBA G League’s Osceola Magic, where he led the team to three consecutive Eastern Conference titles and a G League Finals appearance in 2025.
A Non‑Traditional Path
Murphy’s career trajectory diverges from the conventional college‑to‑NBA pipeline, reflecting a blend of scouting, player development and grassroots basketball.
His eight‑year association with the Orlando Magic organization, including three years as an assistant, provided him with deep insight into player evaluation and development at the highest level.
Prior to his NBA roles, he spent a season as a G League scout for the Atlanta Hawks and honed his coaching foundations with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, where he served as an assistant from 2013 to 2016.
Before breaking into professional ranks, Murphy earned a classics degree from Columbia University in 2012 and began his basketball journey as a blogger, later serving as a graduate assistant at Ball State.
Boynton highlighted that Murphy’s diverse background and unconventional experiences will enrich the Wolverines’ program, complementing the existing staff that includes Akeem Miskdeen, Kyle Church, KT Harrell and newly appointed Mike Martin.
The hiring underscores Boynton’s strategy of blending NBA expertise with developmental acumen as the program prepares for its first competitive season.
