The Louisville Cardinals saw their season come to an abrupt close in the opening round of the ACC Baseball Championship, falling 16-8 to the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday night.
Seeded eleventh, the team entered the tournament with the sole hope of capturing the title to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, a goal that evaporated when Pitt’s offense surged ahead early.
Pitching Woes
Despite out-hitting the Panthers 10 to 12, Louisville’s pitching staff struggled to contain the opposition, surrendering three home runs, nine walks and a flurry of runs that swung the momentum.
Offensive Surge
The offense did manage to rally, scoring five runs in the second inning thanks to RBI singles from shortstop Alex Alicea, first baseman Tague Davis and outfielder Zion Rose, as well as contributions from Griffin Crain and Bayram Hot.
However, starter Wyatt Danilowicz’s rocky debut saw the first five batters reach base and a three-run homer that put Pitt ahead, while reliever Brandon Shannon later surrendered a grand slam that widened the gap.
Late Inning Fight
Mid-game heroics included a two-run single from Rose in the eighth that kept the Cardinals from being mercy-ruled, and a perfect seventh inning from Aaron England that briefly steadied the defense.
Closer Zane Stahl shut down the ninth, but the damage had already been done, leaving Louisville with a 16-8 loss and ending their hopes of an NCAA Tournament appearance.
