North Carolina Central University kicked off fall football practice this week, entering the season with a level of optimism that reflects the program’s recent resurgence.
The Eagles posted an 8‑4 record a year ago, their first full season outside the MEAC’s top two since before the pandemic, and were projected by media pollsters to finish second in the conference.
A Season of Promise
Head coach Trei Oliver said the team does not feel constrained by preseason expectations, instead emphasizing daily improvement during camp and steady progress throughout the year.
Quarterback Josh Jones added that the staff’s focus is on pinpointing areas for growth and turning them into strengths before the first game.
The season opener is scheduled for August 29, when NCCU will travel to face Texas Southern, a test that could set the tone for the campaign.
Winning the MEAC title remains the Eagles’ explicit goal, and early practices suggest a collective belief that the talent and preparation are aligning with that ambition.
