Joliet’s baseball community gathered last weekend to honor one of its own, former Major League right‑fielder Jesse Barfield, as a newly refurbished plaque was unveiled beside his statue outside Slammers Stadium.
A Legend Returns Home
The ceremony marked the return of Barfield, a Joliet native who rose from Belmont Little League to a 12‑year career in the big leagues, earning two Gold Glove Awards and becoming known as one of baseball’s premier right‑fielders.
City officials, local musicians and fans joined the celebration, with a special tribute song titled “Jesse’s Thang” performed by Trista Graves Brown, a fellow Joliet native, and produced by Marcus Smith.
The event gave younger fans a chance to connect with the city’s sports heritage, as Barfield’s story was woven into a narrative of perseverance and community pride.
Legacy in the Community
The statue, which has stood outside Slammers Stadium for years, now bears an updated plaque that highlights Barfield’s contributions on and off the field, reinforcing his role as a bridge between Joliet’s past and its future.
Mayor of Joliet praised the lasting impact of Barfield’s career, noting that his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of athletes who dream of wearing a professional uniform.
