Elsinore High School's baseball team pulled off a 6-4 victory over Santa Margarita in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs on Tuesday, advancing to the quarterfinals.
The Eagles found themselves in a 4-0 hole after three innings, but a series of timely hits and defensive adjustments turned the tide. A two-run single by Robert Gates in the fourth inning sparked a three-run burst that put Elsinore ahead.
Jacob Farias, the Cypress College-bound pitcher, delivered another strong outing, improving to 8-0 on the season. His composure on the mound helped shut down the visiting offense after the early deficit.
A Test of Depth and Strategy
Coach Don Nicholson, who had expressed surprise at the team's elevation to Division 2, praised the squad's resilience. "We knew we could compete," he said, "and the boys executed when it mattered most."
Santa Margarita coach Chris Malec acknowledged the loss but highlighted Elsinore's winning culture. "They have a well-balanced team and they play to win," Malec said after the final out.
The next matchup will see Elsinore host Ganesha of Pomona, a 5-2 winner over South Hills of West Covina. The quarterfinal promises another test of Elsinore's newfound momentum.
Elsinore's offensive surge was fueled by a combination of small-ball tactics and clutch hitting. Isaac Garcia's RBI single added a crucial run, while the defense limited Santa Margarita to just four hits after the third inning.
With a final record of 22-3, the Eagles finish the season with a strong impression, while Santa Margarita closes at 16-14. The quarterfinal against Ganesha will be played on Elsinore's home field, giving the team a chance to carry their home crowd advantage into the next round.
