Revitalizing a Program with Purpose
Bronx Community College announced the hiring of Howie Harrison as its new head coach for the men’s basketball program, a move that signals a fresh push to restore the Broncos’ former glory.
Harrison arrives after two decades of coaching and educational leadership, most recently serving as Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Hostos Community College where he helped rebuild a premier NJCAA program and guided 97 student‑athletes to four‑year colleges while maintaining a 95 percent graduation rate.
His career also includes stints at Emmanuel College, Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Nia Preparatory School and several AAU circuits, plus a championship season as head coach of M.S. 421 in Manhattan and an undefeated campaign with Smith Leadership Academy.
Currently the Athletic Director for New York City Public Schools District 7, Harrison also oversees the district’s My Brother’s Keeper and My Sister’s Keeper initiatives, and he is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Russell Sage College after earning graduate degrees from Columbia University’s Teachers College and Relay Graduate School of Education.
Director of Athletics Dionne Dodson praised Harrison’s deep connections to Bronx youth basketball and his reputation as a mentor, stating that his appointment aligns with the college’s ambition to blend championship‑level competition with academic excellence.
Harrison says his coaching philosophy centers on accountability, hard work and scholarly achievement, aiming to elevate the Broncos within CUNY Community College and Region XV while emphasizing the importance of earning a degree alongside athletic success.
