Court Opens Door for Fifth-Year Eligibility

Among those affected is former Clemson forward RJ Godfrey, who averaged 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 season and was a key contributor in the Tigers’ 2024 Elite Eight run. Analysts have begun to speculate that Godfrey could leverage the extra year to transfer to Arizona, a program that recently eliminated Clemson in the Sweet 16, where he scored seven points.
Clemson’s head coach Brad Brownell now faces the task of reshaping a roster that currently lists 14 scholarship players. Adding Godfrey would require careful adjustments, especially given the program’s financial constraints and the revenue disparity between basketball and football that influences athletic budgeting.
The potential move also raises logistical questions, as the team is presently touring Italy for preseason scrimmages before the fall semester begins. Another Clemson big man, Dillon Hunter, is also being considered for a fifth-year return, further complicating the coaching staff’s planning.
