The first chapter of a new era
More than 4,000 fans packed Springfield’s Robin Roberts Stadium on a warm summer evening, only to wait nearly an hour as a sudden storm rolled through the Midwest. When the rain cleared, the crowd’s excitement was undiminished, and the inaugural game of the Women’s Pro Baseball League finally got underway.
The ceremony opened with a poignant moment: 99‑year‑old Maybelle Blair, a former Rockford Peach, rolled onto the mound in a wheelchair and delivered a symbolic first pitch, reminding attendees of the league’s deep roots in the sport’s history.
The opening matchup pitted the Los Angeles Queens against the New York Heights. Japanese right‑hander Ayami Sato dazzled with a fastball that hit 68 mph, while former Little League sensation Mo’Ne Davis showcased her trademark poise at shortstop. Both teams also featured international talent from South Korea, Mexico, Canada, Australia and Curaçao, underscoring the league’s global ambition.
Justine Siegal, the league’s commissioner and a trailblazer who once threw batting practice for an MLB team, addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the players are “ballplayers, too.” Her words resonated with fans who had waited decades to see women’s professional baseball return to Illinois, the last such venture having been the Rockford Peaches in 1954.
Outside the stadium, fans gathered at the Little Corner Bar, sharing stories and hopes for the season. Local resident Frank Vito called the atmosphere “awesome,” while Springfield native Carol Corgan expressed pride that her city could host a league that draws supporters from as far away as Japan and the Netherlands.
Despite the stadium’s remote location, organizers highlighted improvements in accessibility and promised a full schedule of games through early September, with playoffs to follow. The league’s success now hinges on sustaining this momentum and expanding its footprint across the country.
