Homecoming in Knoxville
Zakai Zeigler, the all‑time leader in assists and steals for the Tennessee Volunteers, returned to his adopted hometown of Knoxville this week to run his second annual I AM G.I.A.N.T. Basketball Camp. The event, held on August 1, gathered about a hundred children aged eight to fourteen, many of whom looked up to the 5‑foot‑9 guard whose work ethic is summed up by the acronym G.I.A.N.T. – ‘Gettin’ To It And Not Talking.’
Zeigler’s journey from a fire‑ravaged home on Long Island to the Volunteer system was bolstered by a community that raised more than $350,000 to help his family rebuild. Now, as he prepares to leave for Germany, the guard reflects on the support that shaped his path and the legacy he hopes to leave on the next generation of players.
Summer League and Global Experience
In the 2025 NBA Summer League, Zeigler suited up for the San Antonio Spurs alongside former Volunteers Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Igor Milicic Jr. The experience gave him a taste of professional pacing and allowed him to bond with teammates who shared a similar collegiate background.
Following the summer circuit, Zeigler signed with Nanterre 92 in France’s Betclic Elite, where he averaged 7.1 points and 5.6 assists per game. He also represented Puerto Rico in FIBA World Cup qualifying matches, appearing in four contests that underscored his international pedigree.
Camp and Community
Before boarding a flight to Europe, Zeigler organized a scrimmage that pitted his camp participants against the current Tennessee Volunteers roster. Coach Rick Barnes praised the group’s talent and competitiveness, noting that the young players are already making strides under his guidance.

On July 28, 2025, the guard announced a move to Hamburg Towers of the Basketball Bundesliga, marking his next professional chapter. The German club, known for its competitive roster, will test Zeigler’s adaptability in a new basketball culture. As he celebrates his 24th birthday on August 2, Zeigler will be en route to Germany, turning the milestone into a quiet travel moment rather than a celebration at home.
