A New Era of Ambition
Oklahoma Sooners football opened preseason camp next week with high expectations after a College Football Playoff berth the previous season. Coach Brent Venables, who reclaimed defensive play‑calling duties, also introduced new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer to the mix.
General manager Jim Nagy and the coaching staff worked to surround John Mateer with more talent and depth this offseason. Twelve offensive transfers joined the program, including receivers Trell Harris and Parker Livingstone and tight end Hayden Hansen. Returning starter Isaiah Sategna III has taken on a larger leadership role, while the offensive line features returning starters Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, E’Marion Harris, Jake Maikkula and Eddy Pierre-Louis.
On defense, the unit that ranked among the nation’s best a year ago returns a wealth of experience. Players such as Adepoju Adebawore, Danny Okoye, James Nesta and safety Michael Boganowski are expected to have breakout roles, while linebacker Cole Sullivan adds depth and linebacker Peyton Bowen provides additional versatility.
The running game, which finished 113th nationally in rushing last season, is a focal point for improvement. Running backs Tory Blaylock and Xavier Robinson return, joined by freshmen Jonathan Hatton Jr., Dezephen Walker and transfer Lloyd Avant. New position coach Deland McCullough says he has five backs ready to play at any moment, emphasizing aggression and mentality.
The tight end position has been completely rebuilt under new coach Jason Witten, with Hayden Hansen projected as the starter. His development will be closely watched as the team looks to add another reliable option in the passing game.
Quarterback John Mateer, who broke his thumb during the fourth game of the 2025 season but returned three weeks later against Texas, has been candid about his inconsistency down the stretch. He blames himself for the Sooners’ erratic offensive play and is determined to elevate his performance.
Special teams also bring stability, with reigning Lou Groza Award winner Tate Sandell handling kicking duties. A competitive punting battle between Grayson Miller and Jacob Ulrich will aim to improve field position.
