Fall Camp Kicks Off in Madison
The University of Wisconsin football program opened preseason practices on Thursday in Madison, marking the start of Coach Luke Fickell’s fourth year at the helm. The Badgers are using the early days of camp to evaluate a revamped offensive line and to integrate a handful of high‑profile transfers.
Fickell emphasized that the staff is zeroing in on five position groups that will shape the team’s identity, with the offensive line at the top of the list. Returning starters and newcomers alike are battling for starting spots, while injuries and leadership dynamics will play a decisive role in the weeks ahead.
Key Position Battles
Among the most watched competitions is the left‑tackle spot, where Florida State transfer Lucas Simmons‑Johansson is fighting for the role after a strong spring showing. At right guard, Colin Cubberly stepped in for the injured Emerson Mandell during April drills and earned high praise from offensive line coach Eric Mateos.
Mandell, a third‑year player, missed much of spring practice because of foot surgery but is expected to be fully ready for fall camp. His comfort and progress will be a barometer for the line’s cohesion, Fickell said.
Two other transfers, Blake Cherry and Stylz Blackmon, are competing for the left‑guard position, adding depth and competition to the interior of the line.
The current projected starting five includes PJ Wilkins, Kevin Heywood and Austin Kawecki, who are expected to anchor the unit.
