A Rivalry Re‑Examined
At a recent NASCAR hauler meeting aimed at cooling tensions between Carson Hocevar and Zane Smith, the former laughed off the notion of a feud, suggesting the dispute was more imagined than real.
Smith, who had deliberately spun Hocevar's car during the Eero 400 at Chicagoland, later confessed that the contact was intentional, a move that added fuel to a rivalry that had already simmered.
In the aftermath, Smith publicly declared his dislike for Hocevar and said he would race him the same way he races anyone else, pending evidence that Hocevar could drive cleanly.
Hocevar, never one to shy from sarcasm, quipped that the conflict should be settled through couples counseling, a jab at Smith's mounting frustration during the discussion with NASCAR officials.
The driver also reminded onlookers that his crew chief had dismissed Smith as irrelevant, emphasizing that Smith was “0 for 2” in attempts to wreck him and that the team saw no reason to engage further.
Statistically, Hocevar sits fifth in the Cup Series standings, boasting a win, five top‑five finishes and nine top‑ten results this season, while Smith languishes in 24th place with only two top‑fives, six top‑tens and three DNFs, none of which have been linked to Hocevar.
Hocevar concluded that the rivalry was not only unmotivating but also embarrassing, especially given that Smith currently holds the 23rd spot in the rankings, making any comparison to a genuine rival feel forced.
