Martone recounted the exact sequence that turned a promising moment into a humiliating footnote.
In the OHL Cup Finals his team trailed 2‑1 when he attempted to fling his stick from the bench toward a defenseman; the shaft landed in an opponent’s skates, causing a trip on a breakaway and prompting the officials to eject him after only five shifts.
He described the episode as the biggest day of his life, recalling the crushing disappointment of watching his team lose while he watched from the sidelines.
At the time he had already contributed seven goals and 15 points, including a goal that briefly gave his side a lead, but the ejection cut his impact short in the second period.
Draft mate Michael Misa, who had broken Connor McDavid’s earlier benchmark with 20 points in seven games, was among the standout performances that night, underscoring the high stakes of the tournament.
Four years later Martone has appeared in ten NHL playoff games for the Flyers, using the memory of that ejection as a catalyst for growth rather than a lingering scar.
