Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg sounded a warning during a recent press conference, saying the Cornhuskers have been too quiet for his liking as the 2026‑27 campaign draws near.
The veteran coach highlighted the need for greater communication and leadership, noting that a roster heavy with newcomers cannot afford silence on the court.
Returning standouts such as Pryce Sandfort and Connor Essegian are already taking steps toward leadership, but Hoiberg insists the team must find a louder voice.
A Quiet Squad Faces a Loud Challenge
Among the newcomers, Utah Valley transfer Trevan Leonhardt and San Diego State transfer Taj DeGourville are expected to shoulder the responsibility of vocal point guards, directing both offense and defense.
Hoiberg stressed that point guards must use their voice to guide teammates, a skill he believes will be crucial for a squad aiming to win 20 straight games to start the season and break new ground.
The coach also set his sights on back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances, a milestone not achieved since the Danny Nee era, and a first‑ever Sweet 16 run.
While he dismissed panic, Hoiberg made it clear he is monitoring progress closely, urging the team to step up and fill the leadership void.
