A Familiar Face Returns to the Ice
The Wheeling Nailers have announced the re‑signing of veteran defenseman Alexander Kuqali to a one‑year deal for the 2026‑27 season, bringing back a player who already knows the organization inside and out.
At 35, Kuqali offers a blend of experience and reliability. In his most recent stint with the Nailers he appeared in 23 regular‑season games, contributing a goal and three assists for four points, and added two assists across 16 playoff appearances as the club advanced deep into the Kelly Cup chase.
Kuqali’s professional journey spans five ECHL franchises — Florida, Quad City, Orlando and Fort Wayne — as well as three seasons in the Elite Ice Hockey League with the Coventry Blaze. Across the ECHL and EIHL he has compiled 122 points (27 goals and 95 assists) in 453 games, a testament to his durability and offensive instincts.
Before turning pro, the defenseman honed his skills at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was part of two Atlantic Hockey Tournament championship teams. As team captain in his senior year he earned All‑Tournament honors and helped the Tigers secure one of their rare NCAA National Tournament victories, a 2‑1 upset over Minnesota State in which Kuqali struck the opening goal.
Off the ice, Kuqali is the second member of his family to wear a Nailers jersey. His older brother Nicholas skated in 25 games for Wheeling during the 2013‑14 and 2014‑15 seasons and the brothers now share coaching duties with the Pittsburgh Predators Hockey Club, a youth program based at Ice Castle Arena.
A Boost for the Nailers’ Defensive Core
Coach and general manager comments highlighted Kuqali’s leadership qualities and his ability to mentor younger players. “Alexander brings a steady presence on the blue line and a winning pedigree that aligns with our ambitions,” the GM said in a statement.
The re‑signing underscores the Nailers’ commitment to retaining talent that has already contributed to community outreach and locker‑room culture. Fans can expect to see the veteran’s familiar number back on the ice when the new season opens.
With the roster set to feature a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging prospects, the Nailers aim to build on last season’s playoff run and contend for the Kelly Cup once again.
