A New Era of Development
Dylan Murphy, a seasoned coach with eight years inside the Orlando Magic organization, has been announced as the newest assistant coach on Michigan’s men’s basketball staff.
Murphy’s career includes a stint as head coach of the Osceola Magic, the G League affiliate that under his guidance captured three consecutive Eastern Conference titles and a G League Finals appearance in 2025.
Murphy’s Proven Track Record
During that period the team posted a league‑best record in the East for three straight seasons, and Murphy was recognized with G League Coach of the Month honors in March 2025.
His coaching résumé also features five years as an assistant with the NBA’s Orlando Magic, a role that followed earlier positions with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and a scouting post with the Atlanta Hawks.
Boynton’s Vision
Boynton, who took over as Michigan’s head coach last month, praised Murphy’s blend of teaching, analytics and communication, saying the hire reflects a commitment to player development and modern basketball strategy.
Murphy becomes the second external addition to Boynton’s staff, joining former director of basketball operations KT Harrell, who has been promoted to a full‑time assistant role.
The Wolverines, traditionally one of college basketball’s most storied programs, are looking to leverage Murphy’s expertise in analytics and relationship‑building as they aim to return to national prominence.
In a statement, Murphy expressed gratitude to the Orlando Magic, noting that his eight‑year tenure provided “invaluable experiences” that he is eager to bring to Ann Arbor.
