Anthem in the Elements
Martha Reeves, the celebrated Motown vocalist, took the stage at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, to deliver the national anthem at the inaugural game of the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL). The performance marked a symbolic moment for a league that aims to revive professional women’s baseball in the United States.
Reeves later recounted that the day’s wet and windy conditions, combined with the absence of stage monitors, left her unable to hear her own voice, making the rendition less polished than she had hoped.
The WPBL, the first major women’s baseball circuit in the U.S. since the All‑American Girls Professional Baseball League folded in 1954, features four founding franchises — New York, Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco — each slated to play a 15‑game schedule at the Springfield venue.
In front of a sell‑out crowd of more than 4,000 fans, the Los Angeles Queens edged the New York Heights 10‑8, underscoring the league’s early excitement and community support.
Despite the imperfect execution, Reeves emphasized that the experience was about more than a flawless vocal delivery; it was about championing a historic venture and the athletes who are paving the way for future generations.
